Metaverse

What is metaverse?

What is Metaverse: Is there a place beyond the physical world where we may go as avatars? Where do we get together with our friends and family, go to concerts together, pursue hobbies, work, shop...? Many are looking forward to such a “metaverse”. We simply explain.

Imagine: You put on special glasses and find yourself in the Louvre. They have their form, a so-called avatar. This is unmistakable. Nobody may and can copy them. Perhaps the character resembles you or resembles you completely. You chose that beforehand. All around you are your clique.

What is Metaverse

Look at everything together. You turn your head and see real paintings in front of you. View sculptures from all sides. You mention to a buddy that you have a sculpture identical to this at home. You scan them briefly in the real world with your cell phone, heave them into the museum as an object and show them to everyone.

After the museum, go to a Telekom shop and extend your mobile phone contract. Or browse through any number of other shops, rooms, halls, and worlds. Pay? There is a separate currency for this, a “cryptocurrency”. Go? Not necessary, you "teleport" yourself, so you can get anywhere immediately at the touch of a button.

The Next Big Thing

More in What is Metaverse, The name for this universe, which is expected to exist one day, is Metaverse. Mark Zuckerberg renamed his company, which combines Facebook, Instagram & Co, in October: from "Facebook" to "Meta". The Greek prefix means "beyond" or "after". "Verse" would be a short form based on Universe / Universum.

The name came up in literature in the early 1990s, but more in dystopian, i.e. critical future scenarios. Another term is "Web 3.0". Reason: Previously used two-dimensional content should appear three-dimensional in the new world.

With the new company name, Zuckerberg underscores how focused he is on the vision. Other businesses and start-ups, as well as the media, analysts, and investors, are following suit. Everyone smells “the next big thing”.

Roblox is leading the way: companies are getting involved

Metaverse Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are two essential technologies that are at the heart of it. The former is behind the immersive experience, i.e. diving into completely different worlds.

The latter shows the user additional information about the visible reality in the glasses, such as with Pokémon Go. In the case of the Metaverse, this would be useful to keep in touch with the parallel world.

Utopia or Dystopia? The pandemic shows how helpful something like this can be to stay in touch. The Roblox platform, for example, is a place where people spend a lot of time together. And companies are already crowding around there, especially to appeal to younger people. The South Korean group Hyundai recently opened its world there.

As with all innovations, the main task must remain that ethical principles are maintained. One thing is certain: the laboratories of manufacturers and network operators such as Telekom are already working at full speed to get networks, software, and devices fit for such new applications. The 5G communication standard, with its low delays, high throughput, and flexibility, is already a big step.

5G Communications

In the article What is Metaverse, 5G is the new generation of mobile communications. It creates the basis for new customer experiences such as augmented reality games or the networking of machines in the industry and intelligent devices.

In addition, technology supports the digitization of many areas of life. Since September 2019, customers have been able to use Telekom's 5G network. Via 5G, the Telekom network achieves transmission rates of up to 1 gigabit per second at its peak.

In addition to speed, the new mobile communications standard also brings higher capacities and significantly shorter response times, so-called "latency". Basic knowledge of the network of the future.
